The Super Skincare Powers of Macadamia Oil

The Super Skincare Powers of Macadamia Oil

Say hello to a super Australian superfood oil that is essential in your skin care routine.

You don’t really hear much about Macadamia oil, so let’s take a deeper look into why it is a super star oil and why it is so great as part of a blend for an anti-ageing moisturising face cream.

What Is Macadamia Oil?

The image of a Macadamia tree is a bit romantic with slender branches, glossy green leaves, and nut-like seeds that are a delicacy around the world.

The tree is an indigenous species to Australia and its nuts rightly thought of as a superfood. The transparent pale yellow liquid gold is produced by pressing the nuts.

With a plethora of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients it is an oil your skin will love.  It contains compounds which are known to assist in skin repair, irritation and reduce environmental stress on the skin. A great quality oil known as a glorious softening emollient oil and its ability to deeply penetrate the skin but not feel heavy or greasy.

The benefits of Macadamia Oil

Oils are essential for your skincare routine, especially if you are concerned with dull, dry or patchy skin. I speak to many women, of all ages and skin types, who say their skin is almost addicted to using their favourite oil. Why?

When you are young an oil will top up the natural oils in your skin which are diminished by the elements or an active lifestyle. As we age, we need more than a top up as our cell turnover falls off and as it does so too, the skins capacity to produce oil.

But not all oils are created equal, let’s check out some benefits;

Hydration - Macadamia Oil is a powerful superfood in skincare and one of my go-to ingredients for moisture defence. More than just a carrier oil, its essential fatty acids, vitamins, and other nutrients that make it an amazing hydrator for your skin, and to prevent the early signs of ageing whilst it soothes a skin which is irritated or blemish-prone.

Additionally, linoleic acid aids in maintaining the skin's moisture content and suppleness by lowering trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). Macadamia oil's moisturising properties are beneficial for a dry skin, aged skin, newborn skin, lip balms, and eye creams.

Anti-ageing & Skin Repair - One of the major benefits of macadamia oil is the prevention or reduction in the signs of ageing. The manganese in macadamia is what boosts collagen production, keeping your skin firm, as well as reviving it entirely.

It also contains squalene and oleic acid that is antioxidant and assists with cell regeneration, making this oil particularly useful for dry or chapped skin as it moisturises. By encouraging the regeneration of skin keratinocytes, the oil may work to delay the onset of wrinkles.

Antioxidants are essential for the health of your skin cells as they work to fight off free radical damage. Skin that has been damaged by free radicals seems dull, lined and older. Fortunately, Macadamia nut oil is rich in Squalene which is one of the most potent antioxidants and produced by your body naturally.

Smoother Skin – Anti-inflammatory by nature, Macadamia nut oil assists maintaining smoother skin and helps to build and strengthen the skin barrier. Oleic acid (omega 9) and fatty acids are great for maintaining skin suppleness, soften skin and prevent it from feeling tight or dry.

Won’t Clog Your Pores – the oil is non-comedogenic but ‘soaks right in’ allowing it to rejuvenate your skin.

Balancing - The high concentration of palmitoleic acid in macadamia oil is the reason that moisturising creams made from the oil can mimic the skin’s natural oil. It contains omega 6 linoleic acid which is useful for balancing oil production even in oily skin and creates a natural protective barrier.

Calming - if you have sensitive skin and your skin is prone to become red and inflamed easily, Macadamia nut oil contains higher quantities of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, which have potent calming properties.

Great to eat - When you eat it, this oil has the perfect balance of omega 3:6 ratio (essential fatty acids our bodies don’t manufacture). Omega-3 is a renowned anti-inflammatory and omega-6 is a pro-inflammatory, making it useful for any disease that is inflammatory in nature such as arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

Conclusion

If you are into organic, botanical or plant-based skin care, Macadamia Oil is an ingredient not to be missed! This superfood is simply amazing for your skin. The anti-ageing, antioxidant-rich oil is naturally super hydrating, moisturising and nourishing for your skin, making it an all-around multitasker and a true skin hero. It helps your skin maintain its own natural moisture and oil balance and will keep it soothed and calm.
