How to: Applying Mineral Mascara

Mascara is fundamental to any makeup application.

In combination with eyeliner, mascara defines and brings colour to the lashes, and highlights and dramatises eyes.

Our mineral mascara has been formulated to go on with less clumping and be longlasting. Apply in layers to get that long, luxurious lash look we all want.  It is also non-irritating and if you wear contact lenses or are prone to allergies, SCOUT Cosmetics mineral mascara is a perfect choice.

Always apply the coats one after the other, before the first coat dries. Once the first coat dries, you'll get clumps if you attempt another brushstroke through the lashes.

Many of us wear too much mascara sometimes. Unfortunately, applying excessive mascara increases the chances that the mascara will flake, peel or smudge and appear hard and spiked.

Also, the eyelashes can take only so much weight, and excess weight can cause them to break. Gunked-up lashes with tons of mascara do not resemble long, thick lashes—they resemble ‘gunked-up’ lashes.

Applying Mascara

The application of mascara is easy and can be done in three steps.

But remember the golden rules of application are:

  • Consistency of coverage; and
  • ‘Less is more’ – it is the mascara placed near the roots - not the tips - that gives the illusion of length.

1.     Wiggle the wand left to right at the base of lashes. Start by applying mascara to the lower lashes by holding the wand at right angles to the eye and parallel to the lashes.

Begin with the underside of your upper lashes, moving the brush slowly upward toward the tips of your lashes. Always hold the wand parallel to your eyelid.

2.     Move the brush slowly and carefully on the upward stroke to encourage separation of the lashes. Remember - Pull the wand up and through lashes, wiggling as you go.

Combine this technique with the traditional upper-lash application of brushing the mascara wand from the base of the lashes up.

3.     After applying mascara wait to blink & double-check lashes once dry.

Try to wait 5 seconds before blinking or you will end up with mascara dots just under your brow.

Keep in Mind

  • Waterproof mascaras are too harsh to wear on a daily basis - they are  difficult to remove and it is all too much for your delicate lashes;
  • Do not wear mascara that smears easily, no matter how much you love the colour;
  • Try not to over-apply mascara; your lashes will look clumpy and stick together;
  • Apply mascara evenly to lower lashes; and
  • Draw the wand from the tube in one application. Pumping the mascara wand in and out of the tube will fill it with air, potentially drying out the formulation, clumping it and contaminate it with bacteria.

Choosing a Mascara Colour

Basic mascara rules are simple:

  • Choose a colour for the look your are after - colored mascara such as blue, purple, or green are not suitable if you're going for a professional daytime look – choose black;

Black works for everyone but can appear a little harsh on very fair blondes.

  • Blondes should opt for brown/black by day and reserve black for night. I personally do not like coloured mascara’s but if you do here are some tips.  Burgundy or plum colours make blue eyes pop, as do blue mascaras.
  • Purple mascara looks great on brown eyes.

Should you Curl

The desire for longer, more striking lashes prompts some women to use a curler that presses them into a ski-jump like shape.

The problem with lash curlers is that they can crease and force lashes into a steep angle, which may look a little unnatural. While curling may make lashes more noticeable, as lashes are fragile, it can also break or pull them out.

If you still want to curl your lashes, only do so before you apply mascara. If you try to do so after application you will end up with broken or strangely bent lashes.

The best lash curlers are the ones with a sponge tip to protect your eyelashes. Squeeze gently with even pressure. Hold for a few seconds and release slowly.
